March 08 Migration/Upgrade
Password Sync | GroupWise to Outlook | Re-Image
Beginning March 10, 2008 we will begin migrating your email from GroupWise to Outlook. Simultaneously, we will also be upgrading your desktop computer to include several necessary updates and software upgrades.
Below is detailed information and instructions regarding this migration/upgrade. Please make sure you have completed all instructions by the dates specified to ensure as smooth a transition for you and over 100 other users.

Novell Password Syncronization
Each time you log in to your computer, you are really logging in to two different systems: Novell and your computer. Usually, you only see the Novell login screen because the password on your computer is syncronized to be the same as your Novell password whenever your update your password.
When we update your computer, one of the changes we will be making is how you log in to your computer. Instead of using a local account profile set up on your computer manually, we will point your login to go to the UNT domain on the campus Active Directory (AD). Outlook requires login information from Active Directory, so you won't have to enter login information for Outlook. Plus, we will have more capabilities when supporting your desktop in the future. The Active Directory password is maintainted by the same system you use to log in to my.unt.edu and other campus-wide systems.
To get you used to logging in to your computer using your EUID and your main password, we will be adding a function to our Novell server that will keep your Novell password syncronized with your EUID password. We will inform you exactly what day this will happen, but it will likely be that we will implement the change overnight, so that the next morning you will log in with your EUID password instead of your old Novell password.
Note: After we apply this change (or if your AMS password expires and you change it), the first time you log in with your EUID password, you will notice another Windows Workstation box pop up. Type in your previous password, and check the box on the lower left. If you're able to log in ok, you should not have to perform this step again. If you have problems, contact the helpdesk.

- Log in to ams.unt.edu and make sure you know your AMS EUID and password.
- Make sure you have enabled the Password Expiration Notice
GroupWise to Outlook
This year, the entire UNT campus will move from GroupWise to Outlook. The migration will occur department by department until every mailbox is working on Outlook.
On March 10, 11, and 12, all users supported by the Facilities Information Systems group will have their mail transferred from GroupWise to Outlook. Starting on March 10, approximately 100 users will be migrated each day - 50 in the morning and 50 in the afternoon. Depending on when you are scheduled to migrate, you will simply be required to close GroupWise for a morning or afternoon, and when the migration is complete, you will log in to Outlook and your mail should all be there!
What Will Be Migrated?
- Mailbox
- Folders (Including Cabinet)
- Sent Items
- Calendar
- Documents
- Contacts (but NOT Frequent Contacts)
- Tasks
What Will NOT Be Migrated?
The following items may need to be reconfigured once you are using Outlook
- Rules
- Frequent Contacts
- Custom settings (Signatures, etc.)
- Proxy Rights - In Outlook they will be called "Delegates"
- Access to shared or resource calendars

Desktop Re-image
Since there are a number of software and configuration changes that need to be made to all computers, we will be installing a newly configured image on your computer. Here are a few of the changes that will be included in the new image:
- Office 2007 (upgraded from Office 2003)
- Outlook 2007 (replaces GroupWise)
- Firefox web browser added
- Internet Explorer 7 (upgraded from IE 6)
- Join UNT domain (unt.ad.unt.edu)
